It’s hard to imagine that the little things we are doing in our homes compare to the scale of disaster affecting our coasts as streaks of oil slicks continue to suffocate wildlife and destroy livelihoods…..but I came across a film the other day that I think is worth sharing….

“DIRT” – a movie with heart & soil! Dirt feeds us and gives us shelter. Dirt holds and cleans our water. Dirt heals us and makes us beautiful. Dirt regulates the earth's climate. Dirt is the ultimate natural resource for all life on earth. Yet most humans ignore, abuse, and destroy our most precious living natural resource. Consider the results of such behavior: mass starvation, drought, floods, and global warming, and wars. If we continue on our current path, Dirt might find another use for humans, as compost for future life forms. (as taken from the website

Earth Day has come & gone….yet most of us don’t take time on earth day or any other day to actually think about the earth, the 5 cm layer of living, breathing soil that serves as the skin of our Mother Earth. Ancient religious texts and spiritual ceremonies still practiced today reference a deep understanding that we all come from the soil, and without it, we cannot survive. The last 100 years has resulted in a loss of over one third of top soil on the planet!

A mere century waging a war on soil through chemical exposure, strip mining, mountain top removal, deforestation, exploitive farming practices, mono-crop agriculture and extermination of biodiversity has left us in a fragile state. The result: soil lacking life (bacteria, micro-organisms, fungi, earthworms, minerals, nutrients) and filled with toxins incapable of providing our species with what we depend on for life itself. Already food riots rage world wide. Once lush areas of vegetation are now turned into barren deserts.

We must remember SOIL as the SACRED MOTHER and source of all fertility. It is our responsibility to tend to her wounds. Watch the film and share it with others.
