Top 3 essential oils for DIY insect repellents
It’s that time again—the sun is shining, families are hiking and the bugs are biting. Whether you are at the cottage, camping or trekking, mosquitoes will be there this summer, ready to nip. It’s important to protect yourself from nasty bug bites, but even more important to use a repellent that is safe for you and the environment. With an array of products on the market, you just have to smell some of the repellents to be weary of their content.
When the potent fragrance of a repellent is so overpowering that you are left with a splitting headache, it is time to consider making your own natural bug spray. We all know about the power of citronella but what else does the trick? Using one of the following three essential oils, you can easily make bug repellents in the comfort of your own home.
- Lavender: This sweet smelling oil is more than just a calming agent. Lavender has been used for many years to avoid insect infestation in clothing and linens.
- Eucalyptus: This strong smelling oil is good to use during and after your outdoor adventure. Known to repel mosquitoes, flies and dust mites but it’s also a great anti-septic:
- Cinnamon: As an aphrodisiac, antispasmodic and insecticide, is there anything cinnamon can’t do? I was surprised to learn that cinnamon oil is an effective natural repellent. Several studies prove that cinnamon oil is extremely capable of killing mosquito larvae.
Natural Repellent Ingredients
Depending on how much fragrance you like, using a spray bottle or mason jar, combine:
