Climate Community Citizen of the Week – Matthew Evans

Congratulations to Matthew Evans this week’s Climate Community Citizen of The Week. We met Matthew through another of our winners – Laura Webber. Matthew has created his own non-profit that is focused on planting trees and many other amazing projects that help his community and help our planet.

The following is a bit of background that Matthew provided to us: Matthew Evans is a sixteen year old high school junior who has integrated his aptitude for science, engineering, mathematics and art into a growing non-profit that focuses on saving the environment through local action. This prompted the founding of his non-profit “Discover Green”. The organization is committed to inspiring young people, particularly those in middle and high school, to take on a community based project that change the environmental footprint of their community. Using the concept of “feed them and they will come”, Matthew created a combo pizza and birthday party with his cousin, calling it “Teen Green Party with a Purpose”. By April of 2010, Discover Green has had over 500 youth volunteers, planted 3300 trees, marked 1200 storm drains and done educational presentations to over 3600 elementary school children during its first 18 months.

For Matthew this is just the first step in his environmental career. With plans to combine his interests in energy conservation, art, and the environment into a career in sustainable architecture, Matthew is currently planning to attend a state university in Texas to major in architecture with an emphasis integrating green living practices locally and globally. Matthew has been chosen by the US Green Building Council as one of their young leaders, is a member of the Green My Parents Champions Board; recognized around the state of Texas by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Keep Texas Beautiful and the Colorado River Foundation. Matthew’s passion has also been recognized by The Climate Project and An Inconvenient Youth – he will be trained by Al Gore June 26-28.

We are very proud to have Matthew as one of our winners – keep up the great work!
