I recently had the task of remodeling this very tiny sunroom into a relaxing sitting area.  I wanted to make it as comfortable as possible but also create some storage.  Anytime we can make the furniture multi task it is very eco-friendly.  The size and architecture of this space was so small and irregular I had custom benches made, courtesy of my very talented Dad, with storage under the seating.  

This space for the bench area is only 5’ x5 ‘, but by making the depth on the seat bigger than most store bought items it gives the illusion something roomier. Thanks to my Mom, who is a master with the sewing machine, I was able to extend the length of the curtains so they would give a grand feeling to the room. The material is light linen, sheer enough to let the light and breeze in, but still give a bit of privacy.

Large prints and patterns, such as the wallpaper on the back wall can also make a small space seem bigger if used moderately.  Wallpaper is a great alternative to artwork and can easily be changed if you get tired of the pattern. 
 

	Using larger floor tiles is also a good trick for making a small space seem bigger.  Here I used 12” x 24” tiles from www.Interceramic.com. They are a local tile distributor and make many of the tiles on site, which is very eco-friendly since it’s not being shipped across the country.
	I found a vintage chandelier and painted it white to match the décor and give this semi-outside space an indoor feel.  Bead board was installed to finish off the ceiling and create space for insulation to cool off the room. The sunroom used to be a hot box because of the lack of air circulation and direct sunlight,  To maximize the ocean breeze I installed two vented skylights www.vellux.com.  They are energy star rated and allow a nice breeze in to cool the room.
	No matter how big your house is you should make the most of it.  A small place doesn’t have to feel cramped as long as you design with appropriate size furniture and minimize the accessories. The smallest space can have a big impact if you just plan carefully. Now this once small-enclosed patio is an elegant extension to the living room when the French doors are open.
