On a hunt for a fun & inexpensive family day, we came across the Getty Museum website. Among the beautiful artwork to be enjoyed at this museum, they also offer many activities, including a FREE family art lab to exercise your family's imagination. It's a two part workshop where kids & parents look at paintings & discuss then create their own art in 3D!
Here's how it works:
Kids are given clipboards to take notes & sketch |
The group walks to the paintings chosen by theme for the day |
The group of families chat with a coordinator about the art. We discuss what we see in the paintings & how it makes us feel. |
We take some time to sketch our own versions of art. Moms & Dads are encouraged to join in. |
We create & enjoy! |

From imagination to creation!

Great Job! Even J. Paul Getty himself agrees (via twiitter, that is)
The final result: Happy & imaginative kids!
