The Diva Cup

Tuesday, 27 January 2009 09:58 by Janine

I am writing about The Diva Cup because I have wanted to use it, thought it might be a good alternative, and wanted to give some girls the scoop. FYI, The Keeper has better, more eco-friendly packaging. The Diva Cup has a catchy marketing name and attractive but much more plastic packaging than The Keeper as I can remember. The bag The Keeper came in actually made me think it was hand done … something else to look into.

So anyway, here’s the scoop …. These devices come in two sizes. The larger size I think was initially created for women that have gone through pregnancy . Both products claim that they are ok for women who have had cesareans to use. As I have not had a child yet, I need to understand why they are saying this. (****)

I bought the smaller size and I feel it’s still a little large. I remember pulling it out of the box, holding it in my hand , and having an impulse to burst out laughing. It’s kind of hard core just from the start. Just imagine that you had a clear, silicone, hollowed out dildo and then cut the tip off so it was about two, two in half inches. You would have a dildo tipped cup, if you will. A tiny quarter inch tip protrudes from this cup, the purpose being similar to a tampon string; a device to aid you in getting it out.

The insertion of the device is similar to a tampon in that you need to be relaxed. Unlike a tampon there is no easy applicator (if you are used to applicator tampons and not Seventh Generation or OB tampons). Also unlike a tampon, the cup is much much larger to insert. I must admit I glanced at the directions and then immediately tossed them in the recycler. I read them, why do I need them? Well …. I needed the directions to remind me how to put this seemingly gigantic thing in! What I figured out on my own is that you cannot just squeeze the device to make it a “half”, you have to squeeze it, then fold it (which seems like again) so it is more of a “quarter”. When you have the right folds ready, you can attempt insertion. Stay relaxed. Initially it may hurt. Maybe use some all-natural lubricant if it hurts too much. It’s just different is all. If you have had intercourse, then you would know that you could essentially “handle” the size of the cup once in. You also do not insert the cup as high as you would a tampon. You want to keep it at a level where the pull device is visibly sticking out of you.

Once in, the cup pops out into its proper cup form. The sensation you may have might be that you have the head of a penis in you. It takes a moment to get used to. Overall I like the product although I would recommend it’s use mainly around the house as the washing of the cup can be messy if you are at work. The silicone, with proper care, is supposed to last up to 10 years. To understand the cost savings to you and the environmental savings to Mother Earth, check out their website.

That's great Janine that you are trying this. I have been using the DIVA cup for about 2.5 years and have had really no problems with it. I do use it when I go out- at my work there is a private bathroom and often you can find the bathrooms with the sink in the same stall as the toilet. At people's homes, you are the only one in the bathroom and it saves from wondering if the cat or dog is going to find your tampons in the garbage and drag them around the house. It just requires a bit of getting used to but it doesn't take long at all. The cup is designed to sit low in your body but I find you don't have to have it sticking out- I would think that may be uncomfortable. It just needs to be low enough for you to grab the pointed end and be able to pull on it. There are some tricks I have discovered such as placing a finger along the side of the cup near the rim and "breaking the seal" of the suction so it pulls out easier. It is very affirming to see the actual blood, and not a mess of stained cotton. I feel much more connected to my cycles. I know that may sound crazy but it's true. Good luck with it. I hope you stick with it as it does save money and landfill space and does not expose your body to toxins.

Good for you Janine for trying the Diva Cup. I have used it for about 2.5 years with no problems. I use it pretty much all the time (when I need it). At work, I can always find a private bathroom, when going out I usually find a bathroom that has a sink in the stall or just discretely wash it out. At other homes, when visiting, it is great because of course you have a private bathroom and you don't have to worry about their dog or cat finding your tampons in the garbage and dragging them around the house or how to dispose of your tampons. Using the cup, in fact, has made me feel more connected to my cycles when I see the blood that I have produced and not a big mess of stained cotton I am dumping in the trash. In my experience, you don't have to have the pointy end sticking out of you, as I would think that may be uncomfortable but just inside where you can still grab it. You do want the cup to sit lower than a tampon but truthfully I don't feel it. I have learned some tricks like placing your finger along side of the cup to the rim and pushing to release the suction to enable the cup to come out easier. It just takes a bit, but not long to get used to. I hope you keep it up as it eliminates landfill waste, is less expensive and is less toxic for you.

OMG why bother? I understand the reason for wanting to conserve the environment but sometimes I think it goes too far.

i agree- good for you! i think it's totally worth the small amount of "getting used to" to bring the diva cup IN and tossing tampons OUT! i'm on a mission to get all my girlfriends to do the same, it's such a great thing for the environment! but the girl at whole foods told me i should replace it after a year, not ten years. i checked the website and it says the same thing- www.divacup.com. check it out!

Way to go! I just started using it myself. It was pretty uncomfortable the first time I tried, but after 1 day I was almost an expert Smile. I bought mine off of iherb.com because I received a $5 off coupon. After shipping and handling, the total cost was less than $20. Just thought I'd pass along the savings! use the promo code ICO037 at checkout to get $5 off your diva cup. Stick it out for awhile, and you will soon come to love it.

There is a Yahoo group for Diva cup users, Keeper users and Moon Cup users. They have tons of suggestions for easy insertion. My dd started using hers at 17 y/o. You do NOT have to be sexually active to be able to use a menstrual cup.

The standard c-fold in the instructions has a blunted point to insert - many first time users find it painful. If you can take a look at the menstrual_cups community on Livejournal, there are lots of helpful posts about different folds for insertion.

The stem does NOT need to be hanging outside of your body, in fact that sounds very uncomfortable. Actually, for many women the cup sits much higher and encircles the cervix, there is no reason why the cup has to sit so much lower if its uncomfortable for you. It's about what works for you. The Divacup is actually a very long cup, as you can tell by this size chart - community.livejournal.com/.../1285963.html . It is very important choose a cup that will fit you correctly, not the cheapest or most easily available, cups are not one size fits all.

I LOVE the diva cup. I rave about to all my friends. Some say "GROSS! I dont want to deal with my blood!" Well you don't. You deal with your blood waaaay less then with pads or tampons. You only have to empty it once a day. It is easy to insert and remove once you get the hang of it. I do not feel it at all once it is in place. It most certainly does not feel like "the head of a penis inside you" that is unless you are dealing with a very soft, hollowed out silicone penis.
I came across this post because I am actually buying another one because mine got lost in the move. I had to use tampons this past period and it made me even more grateful for the DIVA CUP. It is seriously beyond doubt my favorite invention. Just think of all the money you could save every month. Think about how much waste is being left out of the landfills. But seriously...I don't use the Diva Cup because it is green. I use it because it is like not being on your period. You deal with your blood once a day. No strings to pee on, no odor, no mess, no leaks, no worries. GO BUY A DIVA CUP! You will not regret it. It is liberating!
