Designing for a New Era

Thursday, 4 March 2010 10:11 by Nancy

We are living at the dawn of a New Era, a time in history where we have never had this much access to information and technology as well as native cultures from all regions of the world.

With the evolution of design, building and architecture, we have an unprecedented amount of responsibility considering the state of our natural world.  Globally, the earth is changing at a dramatic rate, human population continues to grow exponentially and we continue to tap our natural resources.

With the evolution of modern technology and intuitive living, we can shift from a society that extracts to one that is regenerative and in turn is balanced.

By incorporating, site location, human scale, and natural elements such as, weather patterns and local materials into the design of buildings, we can begin to return to a localized way of designing our communities.

For the past several decades, we have been using templates of cookie cutter homes, buildings and commercial structures to design our urban cities.  What we have discovered is that every region is specific with its own climate, topography and natural resources.  Beginning to integrate all these elements, in addition to, the orientation, the design, materials, and culture of a place we can we begin Designing for a New Era.

Design can be defined as the creation and execution of an object, space or system.

In its broader terms, it has the capacity to represent many things, in this context design is not only referencing our homes and workplace, but also to our landscapes our neighborhoods and in turn our cities.

In taking a journey through design, we begin with the interior and work our way out, painting a picture on how everything is interrelated.

Often times, sustainable design is not seen, but rather it is felt. Now is a time to see interior design as a hybrid of combining such key components as green building and design as well as ecological interior and exterior spaces.

One of the biggest problems we face are environmental toxins, chemicals and other materials, created largely from industry, masked as dryer sheets, smoke, scented candles, antibacterial products, air fresheners, cleaners, furniture, deodorizers, cat litter, sprays, perfume/cologne and synthetic fibers.

These chemicals have saturated our water, food and the very air we breathe, but most important, they have entered our bodies and now we are passing this on to our children.

So, what is in our interiors?

  •   Phthalates – Found in plastics, plastic wrap, plastic bottles, plastic food containers and fragrances
  •    Phenols – Found in household cleaners, perfumes, polishes, waxes and hard plastics.
  •   Urea Formaldehyde – Found in furniture, carpets, upholstery, plastics, building materials and foam insulation.
  •   Biological Pollutants – Found in dust, mold and mildew.
  •   Organochlorine Compounds – Found in pesticides, chlorine, paints, waxes, plastics, PVC and vinyl.
  •   VOC   : volatile organic compounds – Found in paint, furniture and carpeting.
  •   PBDE : polybrominated diphenyl ethers - Found in flame retardants found in furniture, soft furnishings and electronics.

Many of these chemicals are not only found in our living environment, but have made their way into our food supply through the various natural cycles found in life.

Common practice uses a variety of chemicals in our soft furnishings, carpeting, electronics and fabrics; information that should encourage us to be as discerning as possible.  It is key to eliminate these chemicals, in addition to, a host of many others that have never been tested for their toxicity levels to human life.

These days there are material and product selection for all things green. Consult your experts and always source products that are built to last, made properly, non-toxic and healthy.

There is a new approach to the conventional way of designing and building that incorporates new ways of thinking, in a more fundamental manner, such as incorporating lifecycle analysis as well as form and function, amongst so much more.

Let us start designing and creating a future that does not require purchasing food, clothing and furniture that does not have chemicals in them, but rather making sustainability standard practice and green building and designing becoming a way of life.

Happy Hearts Fund

Thursday, 11 February 2010 09:09 by Nancy

Happy Hearts Fund is REBUILDING SCHOOLS in HAITI! Happy Hearts (HHF) helped the children of Haiti in 2007 by building an IT lab and again, we are there working with the people of this Caribbean nation in the next phase of rebuilding their country.

HHF concentrates it's efforts on the rebuilding stages of areas devasted by natural disasters. The post disaster recovery focuses on a sustainable long term plan, aimed at bringing happiness back to children's livesthrough educational and sustainable programs, such as micro-credit initiatives that will support the projects. HHF has built more than 46 schools in 8 countries impacted by tsunamis, earthquakes, hurricanes and floods in Thailand, Peru, Indonesia and Mexico with additional programs in India, New Orleans, Sri Lanka and Haiti. Currently, we are building Francisco Perez Acampa School, set to be completed this spring and Rosa de Santa Maria School, also slated to be completed in the spring. More then 12,000 children and 250,000 community members benefit annually!

Supporting children and their communities through the reconstruction of their communities after natural disasters is a critical component in the rebuilding of a country. This kind of effort bulids not only long term benefits, but empowers the community with the essence of education, unity and pride. Children that are uneducated are more susceptible to violence, human trafficking and abuse. Our programs are geared at helping children integrate back into their communities, build self esteem while exploring their intelligence and their gifts.

Happy Hearts Fund collaborates with NGO's, local municipalities, banks, universities, private companies, schools and people like you. It is through mutual collaboration that we are able to succeed in our mission to "Bring Happiness Back!" to the children of devastated areas.
Founded in 2006 by Petra Nemcova, after surviving the 2004 tsunami, she now relieves the suffering of victims of natural catastrophes through her organization, Happy Hearts Fund.

The Board of Directors underwrites all administrative and fundraising expenses, to ensure that 100% of public funds are directly used to build schools and new infrastructures for education.

The Green Retrofit

Wednesday, 3 February 2010 10:53 by Nancy
Planning on wanting to save some money?  Consider a green retrofit!

It can be as simple as changing out some fixtures or as complex as having an entire energy audit done to your home.

What many people don’t realize is the reality that with a modest investment, one can ultimately save hundreds of dollars annually

in addition to having a lighter carbon and water footprint.

Think of this upgrade like putting your home on a diet, per se, something that would result in a healthier home for you and your family, in addition to creating green habits for all!

Start with the finite natural resources that you use, such as energy and water.  Is it ever being wasted by leaving a light on or perhaps forgetting to turn the water off as your washing the dishes?  An excellent point of reference is to start by being aware of how you consume these resources.  Adding inexpensive aerators to all the faucets will guarantee that you will save one gallon of water per minute.  A showerhead can easily be adapted and will also save a gallon per minute without compromising a memorable shower.  Annually thousands of gallons are wasted while waiting for the water to get hot, consider collecting that water to quench your plants thirst.

Adding power strips at all outlets, that have multiple plugs, can not only safe you money and prevent
phantom loads while also eliminating excess electromagnetic fields.

Confirm that all your doors and windows are sealed properly and that every door has a threshold.  Older homes have the tendency to leak air into and out of the home, something that may be solved with some chalking.  For more serious issues consider an energy retrofit which would solve all these issues. Companies such as Recurve are not only the national experts but are also Bay are based.

Next time you go shopping think twice about the items you purchase, it is estimated that we discard an estimate 95% of purchased items 6 months after being bought.  Being a discerning shopper will save you money, space and time while eliminating the need of discarding more stuff.  Opt out of purchasing something cheap, that may very well be made with toxic materials, and try to find it second hand.  Can’t find it at your local thrift store?  It is worth spending the extra amount to avoid needing to replace the cheaper version.

Incorporate this in your food shopping as well and take advantage of the bulk section.  Not only will you take advantage of great prices but you will reduce your need for packaged goods!  Personally, I reuse my plastic bags over and over again – most stores will also credit you for every bag you re-use.

Start applying all these simple tips into your daily life and begin to enjoy the savings.  You may not notice them initially but over the span of a few months or so, the savings will start to add up!

State of Green Business

Tuesday, 12 January 2010 08:20 by Nancy
The evolution of the environmental movement has oscillated from the media and the congress floor to the back of agendas for the past four decades.   In recent years the movement has been taken on a new surge, wrapped in scientific data, images and graphs offering proof to naysayers that, in fact, we have a global problem and humanity is at the crux.

State of Green Business Forum 2010

Through the past several decades a new form of doing business has taken root.  This new way of operation has taken apart what had been known as business as usual and has created a new dogma - one that stands for far greater objectives than the bottom line.  This new form of Capitalism which views life as an inherent part of business creates economic, social and environmental value through social responsibility.

Today, green business is responsible for having created a new source of eco-nomics.  Eleven years ago the Dow Jones introduced the Sustainability Index, considered to be the first global platform in which indexes were tracked and measured for companies that held the model of the triple bottom line - people, planet, profit.

With green business having started on a grassroots plane, it has continued to gain momentum using the strategy of integration from the top down and the bottom up while harnessing the power of the individual.  Through these years, there have been visionaries and their companies serving as pillars, nurturing their ideas and exploring the vast territories encompassing green business.

For the past ten years, GreenBiz.com has been a beacon of information, resources and education for individuals and business.  Aside from being the flagship site for Greener World Media, they offer market specific websites for technology, building, design and of course business.  Boasting a strong portfolio, GreenBiz provides businesses with indispensable tools through the form of conferences, annual reports, education, and networking.

This is the time of year for one of GreenBiz's annual forum's, the State of Green Business, hosted by Joel Makower - dubbed by the Associated Press as "The guru of green business practices."  The forum is slated to cover innovative technology, marketing, green business, carbon management, and information technology. All the issues and business trends relative to each topic will be discussed amongst a dozen industry thought leaders through panels and lectures.

The all day program will be led by a dynamic list of speakers aimed at creating a thought provoking experience to pique interest, attention and action.  The forum will wrap up with a networking opportunity to further expand and cross pollinate disciplines while expanding  our understanding of this evolving industry.

This event will be taken to Chicago and will be followed up by the release of GreenBiz's highly acclaimed annual report the State of Green Business

This event is geared at those on the cusp of green business and industry, intrigued in viewing eco-nomics from the cutting edge.

Eco-Resolution

Thursday, 7 January 2010 18:58 by Nancy
Not only is a new year upon us but so is a new decade, perhaps an ideal time to map out the many things you plan on manifesting.  For many people it is jumping on the treadmill, for others it could be eating only organic and local food and for many it can be something such as spending more time with those you love.

The beauty is that New Years resolutions are aimed at improvement and personal growth.  It is suggested that these resolutions are written down on paper, in a journal or perhaps even a vision board.  Having them on paper solidifies your commitment and reminds you that you have set personal goals for yourself.  This time of the year is perfect to use the reset button and start anew and twelve months later to reflect on how far you have come along, only to propel you to push yourself the following year for those more lofty goals.

This year consider integrating an Eco-Resolution from now on.  How about making a personal difference in your own personal footprint?  Start out by finding out the size of your footprint, based on your lifestyle.  This will help you gauge where you need to start placing some more attention - perhaps it is on your water consumption, your waste production or the amount of energy you use.

Whatever it is you choose, the first step begins with observation.  Start paying attention: do you leave the water running when you are brushing your teeth, shaving or washing dishes?  What about leaving a trail of lights on, while rooms are unoccupied?  Have you ever paid attention to the amount of waste that you are producing?

These are all excellent and simple ways to get the ball rolling on your way to an Eco-Resolution and take advantage of all the available resources.  Consider dusting off your bike - you not only get your workout, get around faster, but you will save on money and carbon - you can't beat that!

Still want to do more?  Not a problem, the good thing is you can effect every facet of your life from how you shop, how you eat, the products you use, to how you get around and even what furnishings are in your home.

It can be a bit daunting but the key is to start small, remember going green is a process and use the tools that are available to help you along.   For guides, resources and a glossary check out my resources page, its chock full if excellent information!

Happy New Year and Happy Greening!
