Eco Wed Series: Green Wedding Photography

Wednesday, 10 March 2010 01:00 by Kathy
Now that you've got all the eco wedding resources you could ever need from the last several posts in this series, including the top green wedding blogs on the net, it's time to move on to the details.  And we begin with photography.

Capturing all the critical little moments of your wedding day is one of the most important aspects of your wedding.  You want a wedding photographer that gets your style, shoots in a way that grabs you and knows which moments are the ones that shouldn't be missed.  And, once you've found all that, is there anything else that matters?

Well, if you're a bride looking to have the most positive environmental impact possible with your wedding, then yes, there is.  You know with all the emphasis on the flowers, the food and the fashion, sometimes its easy to forget that photography can also make a difference in how sustainable your wedding day is.  But what is eco wedding photography?  And what is it that wedding photographers can do to be greener?  Here's what a few eco-minded wedding photographers have to say on the matter:

A Timeless Touch - D.C./Baltimore

Vrai Photography - Chicago

Kristina Carter is arguably one of the most in-demand photographers in Chicago and brides flock to Vrai to get their hands on her artistic genius.  Not only is she the creative force behind Green Diva eco bridal jewelry's last photo shoot, she's also a pioneer in the greening of photography in the Chicagoland area.  Check out her work capturing the tiny little details of this REAL eco wedding.

Balance Photography - D.C./Baltimore

Rissa and Nathaniel are leading the green charge both in the studio and out.  Not only do they operate a conscious photography operation, they also recently coordinated D.C.'s first Mid-Atantic Green Wedding Show.  What does this dynamic duo have to say about being a green photographer?

Eco Wed Series: Must Read Green Wedding Blogs

Wednesday, 24 February 2010 08:58 by Kathy

This post wraps up the "resource" portion of the Eco Wed Series and will give you all the blogs you need to learn just about everything there is to know about having a stylish and thoughtful green wedding.  In no particular order are some of the best green wedding blogs on the web.  Get the RSS feeds and follow them weekly, or sometimes daily, to find your unique inspiration for what it will mean when you get married in the most eco conscious way.  (Disclaimer:  this list is by no means exhaustive.  There are many new green blogs popping up daily, so forgive me if I've missed one.)

Launched in December 2009, Eco-Beautiful Weddings blog and magazine is the brain child of veteran event planner and floral designer Katie Martin of Elegance & Simplicity. But don't be fooled by its newbie status, Katie's been putting on green weddings for well over a decade and has compiled a team of expert bloggers (myself included) who live and breath the eco life every day.

Stacie Shepp is truly a woman of ethics.  Rather than aiming to make a quick buck off the green movement,  Stacie breaks the mold by offering information for the sake of information to make your eco wedding planning that much simpler.  Even her directory for brides to scope out green wedding vendors is free for vendors to list in.  But don't worry, she checks out every company she lists first.  Check out her fabulous Eco Wedding blog for insider tips on what it means to have a green wedding coming from a former bride who did just that.

Glam Green Weddings, at green-wedding-blog.com, is the luxe-inspired exploration of all things wedding by yours truly.  After I complete this eco wedding series on The Green Girls, you can continue to discover more of my tips and ideas there, including stylish, affordable, luxurious and funky eco wedding finds.

The spirit of one of the first books on green weddings, Eco Chic Weddings by Emily Anderson, lives on in her weekly blog of the same title. Always brimming with handy creations pulled from unlikely sources, Emily knows how to put a wedding twist on any green discovery.

Dream Green Weddings blog is one of my favorite places to go for color inspiration as a designer. Authored by Heather of Dream Green Weddings favor, decor and invitation shop, this blog finds bright inspiration and packages it up neatly for your dreamy viewing pleasure.

I'm not sure how they find the time to do it, but the folks at Earthly Affair eco wedding invitation company somehow manage to post new articles almost daily on all the various trends and resources floating around for the green bride.  For up-to-date inspiration, this is a must-see.

Green-ish Wedding blog is a great compilation of all the little things you can do to have a positive environmental impact through your wedding.  Rather than focus on all-or-nothing, this blog believes that 'every little bit counts.'

Not only is InviteSite a fabulous eco luxury wedding invitation provider, they run a darling blog that surfaces new off-beat stories and finds each week.  For off-the-radar ideas, this is a blog you've got to check out.

Although the Knot may still be lagging behind a bit when it comes to fully embracing the green wedding movement, it's at least refreshing that they have started to take a step in the right direction with their new eco-minded blog

Ecopolitan Bride is still growing in size and is an excellent resource for fashion finds and color palettes.  They even have a FREE Eco Wedding Planner suite of resources, including checklists, budget sheets and more.

Eco Wed Series: Green Wedding Books

Thursday, 18 February 2010 05:00 by Kathy

Among the many resources covered in this series about having an eco friendly wedding, books may very well be one of your best.  Although new eco-minded wedding vendors and products pop up daily that may not appear in some of these books, you'll still find a wealth of knowledge about how to go about finding green wedding providers as well as learn what you can do independently to ensure that your wedding is as sustainable as possible.

Enjoy this insightful interview with Kate Harrison, author of the
Green Bride Guide, to learn more about what it means to go green as a bride.  Additionally, check out the list below of all the green wedding books I know of for further guidance on how to make your environmental impact as low as possible on your big day.

Eco Chic Weddings - Emily Anderson

Emily is also an avid writer who has published several books on going green and shares her personal experiences on being green on blogs such as
Eco Chic Weddings and Eco Beautiful Weddings.
