Monday, 22 February 2010 18:08 by Angela
Recently I posted a gift guide for girls under $50.00 and now it’s time for one for guys! I found lots of great items under $30.00 so I stuck to a smaller amount. If you have a larger budget, you could always pick up a few of these things. This is a small sampling of items to give you inspiration. They all have one thing in common - they are green!

For Every Guy

You can never have enough socks, right? And, it seems like they are so easy to lose! This Smartwool Men’s 3-Pack Gift Box  from EMS is just $29.98 right now – and very green!

Or, maybe food is more up his alley? Organic truffles are a decadent and green choice! Try this 15 pc Set for just $25.00 from Lake Champlain Chocolates. Better yet – find a local shop in your area that offers organic chocolate and then you don’t have to worry about shipping!

I was surprised to see that organizations like MLB and the NFL are selling organic cotton clothing! NFL Shop is offering this Men’s Organic Cotton NYG Polo for $29.99 currently. They have lots of products and teams to choose from at reasonable prices.

Green Gifts for Girls Under $50.00

Monday, 15 February 2010 11:22 by Angela

With the current recession (and just wanting to cut back on spending!), it seems like everyone is talking about how to make the dollar stretch. Gift-giving is something that I have personally curtailed my spending on. For holidays and birthdays, I generally try to keep my gifts to friends and family under $50.00. Here are a few eco-friendly gift ideas I have specifically for girls. If you have a larger budget, maybe you could pick up a few of these things:

Refurbished Electronics

This Sandisk Sansa Fuze 4GB is currently $39.99 from Buy.com. This is a great gift for girls or guys because everyone seems to love music! I love refurbished electronics because they are a great alternative to buying new. Most products still come in the manufacturer packaging and really look and work like brand new. This player holds 1,000 songs at a budget price.

Beeswax Candles

Although soy candles are all the rage, beeswax candles are natural and burn for a longer time. This Kathleen Lewis Beeswax Candle from Vickerey is currently just $19.50. It burns for 45-50 hours with natural fragrances.

Recycled Glassware

Besides wine glasses, another nice option is this Recycled Glass Wine Carafe from Bambeco offered at just $19.00 currently. Made from 100% recycled glass, this eco-friendly carafe would make a great gift paired with a bottle of organic wine.

Sustainable Jewelry

Jewelry generally makes a great gift and I especially love the gorgeous necklaces from The Leakey Collection. This Amani Necklace is currently $39.95 and contains beads made from grass and fallen wood. And, the dyes are low impact and beautiful.

Eco-friendly Scarves

I like organic fabrics and these Mociun Hand-Printed Scarves from Beklina are gorgeous. Made from 100% organic cotton, these scarves are not only fashionable but a better choice for the environment too. Currently, they are offered at just $40.00 a piece.

Affordable Eco-Friendly Workout Clothing

Saturday, 30 January 2010 21:45 by Angela

Whether you are an avid exerciser or someone who takes an occasional bike ride, you know that physical activities require a certain kind of attire. There are so many options when it comes to apparel. Eco-friendly athletic wear is pretty easy to find now, but not all of it is wallet-friendly! Here I will showcase a few brands that will help make your decision a little easier.

New Balance: For hard-core workouts, performance fabrics are great. They can cost a little more but are certainly worth it for long sessions. New Balance offers a variety of affordable tops and bottoms made with Cocona. Cocona fabric is made from coconut shells making it a natural option. This Short Sleeve Performance Top is currently on sale for $29.24.

Gaiam: Mostly known for their yoga gear, Gaiam offers lots of organic cotton tops and bottoms. Check out their Outlet section often for new deals. These Organic Cotton Yoga Pants are currently on sale for $24.99 and can certainly be used for activities other than yoga!

Vickerey: Vickerey is a another shop that mostly focuses on yoga gear. Their sale section generally has great deals. They offer eco-friendly clothing from Patagonia, Mission Playground, Prana, and others. This Men’s Organic Primaries Tee Shirt is a nice deal at $19.00 now.

Ebay: Don’t forget about Ebay as a great resource for athletic apparel. If it does not gross you out, used clothing is a very green option since it is keeping garments from going in the trash. You can also find great deals on new clothing. In the athletic section, search for terms like “organic,” “bamboo,” and “cocona” to find eco-friendly options. I have purchased organic fitness tanks for around $10.00. You just have to be patient and check back often.

These are just a few of the many places you can find eco-friendly workout apparel. There are always deals to be had – sometimes it just takes a little longer to find! So be patient and you can certainly stick to your budget. I also find that new workout clothing is added motivation for me to exercise. I hope it works for you too!

Natural Bedding that Won't Break the Bank!

Thursday, 21 January 2010 17:48 by Angela

When it comes to bedding, there are so many options to choose from! Eco-friendly offerings are much easier to find than just a few years ago. Organic cotton and bamboo bedding are now sold at places like Walmart and Target. Here I will present a few different places to find natural bedding and how much it will cost you:

Amazon: This website seems to offer everything – and eco-friendly bedding is no exception. Just searching for “bamboo” or “organic” under the Bedding & Bath secion will produce lots of results. These Magnolia Organics Essentials Sheet Sets start at just $43.99 currently.

Gaiam: A long-standing company best known for its yoga products, Gaiam offers a pretty decent selection of natural bedding. It can be pricey, but they almost always have nice offerings in their clearance section. This Bangalore Duvet in Full/Queen is currently on sale for $119.99.

Under the Canopy: This site is chock-full of natural bedding at great deals right now! They offer organic bedding and clothing. This Violet Haze Duvet in size Full/Queen is just $59.99 right now and is made of 100% organic cotton.

Walmart: To prove that truly everyone is hopping on the “green bandwagon”, I had to mention Walmart. They offer a variety of green bedding options such as this 100% Organic Cotton Bed Pillow, presently for $19.88. And, chances are, you have one of these stores near you!

This list is certainly not exhaustive and I encourage you to check out other businesses in your area which may offer natural bedding options. It is also good to remember that you spend (or should spend!) a third of your day lying in bed. So, while super-comfy bedding can be expensive, it is a good investment and will certainly be used. And a good night’s sleep can make for a much better day!

Green Valentine's Day Gifts on a Budget

Tuesday, 12 January 2010 20:39 by Angela
Need some help picking out Valentine's Day gifts for your sweetheart? It can be difficult, especially when looking for an eco-friendly gift. While not consuming anything new is probably the greenest option, here is my list of some pretty green, affordable V-Day gifts:

Organic Flowers

Flowers are a classic gift for Valentine's Day. They can come as a nice surprise at home or delivered to your partner's place of employment. Organic Bouquet sells a variety of organic flowers that will be sure to delight. This Crimson Petite Bouquet is gorgeous and under $30. Flowers can be gifts for guys, too!

Organic, Fair Trade Chocolates

Sjaak's Organic Chocolates sells a nice variety of chocolates, some of which are organic and fairly traded. For Valentine's Day, their Vegan Nuts & Chews Chocolate Assortment looks delicious. Besides being fairly traded and organic, it is vegan and only $9.95 for the box. They can even gift wrap it for you for extra money. If you have a local, non-chain chocolate shop in your area, they may have some nice options also.

Dinner In or Out!

If the two of you have a local restaurant you love, then going out for Valentine’s Day is often a nice idea. Even better, stay in and make a nice dish that you would not normally make! Grab a bottle of organic wine and light some eco-friendly candles. If you don’t have organic wine available in your area, you could try ordering online from The Organic Wine Company.

Spa at Home

Since going to a spa can be very expensive and, depending on where you live, hard to find organic products, why not have a spa experience at home for Valentine’s Day? I like Bolla Soaps natural (mostly organic) massage oils and bath salts. Indigo Wild’s Zum Whiff Sticks Diffuser Sets in natural scents like lavender can make for a relaxing holiday.

I hope these ideas were helpful to you!
