DAILY GREEN LIVING TIPS

Tuesday, 24 March 2009 10:08 by Nancy

 Go GREEN! Day 11/365 EXPLORED!!

  • Americans use 170 gallons of water per day - 7x per capita average. Turn the tap off when you are brushing your teeth or washing the dishes. It will save up to 2.5 gallons of water per minute!

  • Burning coal produces CO2 – the main contributor to global warming. Every time you turn on an electronic, use your car and even shower (since your water needs to be heated) you are emitting CO2. Prevent wasting it by not letting your car idle for more than one minute (it wastes less gas) and leaving the lights on in unoccupied rooms.

  • Unplug unused electronics i.e. tv, dvd, coffee pots, toasters, etc you can save up to 40% on your energy bill

  • Know what your municipality recycles: they usually accept envelops with windows, plastic wrappers etc

  • Kick the plastic bottle habit and use a reusable canteen instead. 2.5 million bottles of water are tossed every hour in California!

  • Recycle your plastics? Great, but plastic downgrades and after being recycled multiple times becomes inert and ends up in landfills. Consider purchasing items sold in glass jars instead, and best of all you you store food in it afterwards - glass can indefinitely be recycled and don’t leach anything into your food!

  • Fish and birds mistake plastic for food, and consume it – this effects our food supply and our ecology. Eliminate your need for plastic bottles, Zip Lok bags, and plastic bags

  • Many popular types of fish are endangered – reference your Seafood Watch card when making your decisions! www.mbayaq.org

  • Garbage thrown on the street in Pasadena will make it to the beaches through our storm drains – if it is not collected by beach clean up after a storm, it washes into the ocean. Volunteer for beach clean up with Heal the Bay

  • Plastic does not biodegrade, and biodegradable plastic is made from GMO

  • Americans consume 400 – 500 beverage containers annually - chose beverages made from glass

  • We have a garbage patch of plastic in the Pacific Ocean 2x the size of Texas and is 300’ deep - reduce your waste, educate yourself and know your seafood

  • Californians throw away 600 plastic bags per second which result in more than 90 billion plastic bags annually – about 552 bags per person - use reusable bags instead!

  • Tossing cigarette butts into the streets end up on our beaches and in our oceans

  • Even when electronic devices are turned off, but plugged in, they still uses energy - Save over 1,000 lbs of carbon dioxide and $256 per year. Collectively this costs Americans about $3 billion a year.

  • You can save 300 lbs. of CO2 by changing 3 frequently used bulbs with CFL’s. They also use 60% less energy than a regular bulb

  • It's illegal to throw away batteries - locate your local hazardous waste pick up site and dispose of your old paint, bleach and nail polish while you are at it!

  • You can save 5 Lbs. of CO2 per ream of paper if used 100% post consumer - always opt for recycled options!

  • Did you know you can remove your name from receiving junk mail and yellow pages for free? Check it out: http://www.donotmail.org/ and http://www.yellowpagesgoesgreen.org/

  • Wrap your water heater with a $20 blanket and save on energy while preventing 1000 Ibs of CO2. Also, keep your water heater thermostat at 120°F and save 550 lbs. of CO2 and $30 per year!
HANGING THE RAIN OUT TO DRY.

  • Hang dry your clothes - it will conserve your clothes and you will save on costs, while preventing 700 lbs. of CO2 when you air dry your clothes for 6 months out of the year

  • Wash your clothes in cold water and save on energy used to heat it - your clothes will last longer too!

  • Pay bills online and switch to online banking - you will save on costs, paper and energy, and its so convenient!

  • Always choose energy star appliances when you have the option - they save over 30% on energy bills!

  • Bring greenery into your home - plants are natural filtration systems, and don’t under estimate what fresh air can do for your indoor air quality!

  • Use a brick or a two-liter bottle, filled with sand or water and set it into your toilet tank, avoid the flapper valve. This saves on water every time you flush!

  • Consider an low flow shower head, the can save up to one gallon of water per minute - approximately 750 gallons per month!

  • You can save 2,400 pounds of CO2 a year by recycling half of the waste your household generates More...
