Video: Sophia Bush & Austin Nichols Travel to Gulf to View Impact of Spill

Friday, 25 June 2010 07:34 by GreenGirls

Actors Sophia Bush & Austin Nichols are always more than happy to talk about their environmental efforts each time we run into them on the red carpet.  Walking the walk, they headed out to the Gulf to view the impact of the spill and talk to the locals first hand.

WHAT:
Global Green CEO and President Matt Petersen and New Orleans Director Beth Galante are guiding a group of young Hollywood actors to Grand Isle today and will be in New Orleans tomorrow. The delegation includes:

WHO:
Sophia Bush (One Tree Hill)
Austin Nichols (One Tree Hill)

WHEN:

On Monday, June 21st, they are touring the oil spill by boat at the Bridgeside Marina. They will have lunch at the Barataria Restaurant before attempting to clean up one of the beaches. Later this afternoon they will help a group called the Bucket Brigade with some mapping of the spill. They will also meet with fisherman and community leaders.

On Tuesday, they will return to New Orleans and are available to speak with media about what they witnessed. They will also meet with city officials and tour the Global Green Holy Cross Project in the Ninth Ward built according to top energy saving standards, and meet with Global Green staff and supporters for an assessment of actions and activities.

Monday, June 21st (approximate times)
10am – 12pm Boat tour of Gulf
1 pm – lunch
2:30 – beach cleanup
4 pm – document spill with bucket brigade
5 pm – depart Grand Isle
8 pm – arrive New Orleans

Tuesday, June 22nd
Available to speak with media in New Orleans

WHY:
Many tv and film industry performers and producers have been spending more time in Louisiana due to the favorable tax benefits that have incentivized film shoots and production here. Many have bought homes here, or return frequently. They have become concerned about the fate of the region. These young actors here on Monday and Tuesday have ties to Louisiana, have been discussing the spill, and plan to report back to their colleagues and fans on the impact of the spill with an eye to how they might support those here in Louisiana who have hosted them so warmly during the actors’ time here.

Global Green USA is committed to helping New Orleanians rebuild a sustainable city by providing green building information for homeowners, residents, builders and architects in New Orleans, mirroring Global Green's national and regional initiatives of "fostering a global value shift toward a sustainable and secure future."

Global Green USA is a national environmental organization that merges innovative research, cutting-edge community-based projects and targeted advocacy to create a sustainable future. Dwell on Design

Tuesday, 22 June 2010 07:44 by Beth

If you like Dwell magazine, then get ready to get up close and personal, because this weekend is the Dwell on Design show in Los Angeles, June 25th-27th!  For three days some of the most amazing design concepts and designers will be collaborating in one place to display their furniture, fixtures and knowledge.  On the “Sustainability Stage” there will be some great speakers including Ed Begley Jr. (Mr. Green himself), Angelo Surmelis from HGTV, editors from Dwell and many more amazing designers and architects.

As much as I want to hear all the speakers, I usually like to run around the showroom first to see everything while making mental notes of where I want to go back and see more.  There will be plenty of Green products at the show too, from companies like Copeland, Environment, Loll and Modern Mural.

I am particularly interested in checking out a company called Cleveland Art, shown below.  Jason Wein founded this company in 1994. While working at the family salvage yard as a young man he saw the potential of industrial machinery and surplus being repurposed and recycled as functional design for the home, office and retail setting. They make tables, storage units, lighting, art pieces and much more.  Cleveland Art has a 7000-sqft warehouse in Los Angeles and two other locations in Ohio and Florida.

This shelving unit by Cleveland Art is way more interesting than a bookcase from Pottery Barn.

Ritz

There is plenty to do after the show as well.  On Saturday night you can head on over to the Ritz Carlton, 900 West Olympic Blvd, just across from LA Live for an after party put on by eco consulting, dwell and Westside USGBC-LA.  This Ritz Carlton is pending LEED certification and of course it’s amazing…it’s the Ritz! There will be food and cocktails in support of DWELL on Design.   The event is free, but in exchange for a suggested donation attendees will receive a generous gift bag filled with eco items!  All donations will benefit T4T – Trash for Teaching dedicated to minimizing waste and maximizing education.

Trash1  Trash2  Trash3

Trash for Teaching collects clean and safe cast-off materials from manufacturing processes (that would otherwise become trash) and repurposes them as educational resources.  With those materials they provide a comprehensive arts education program in local school districts, which includes teacher workshops and classroom instruction. Their programs feature the popular Treasure Truck visit making their materials readily available to teachers and students in the schools, and helping to bridge the gap between the excess of waste created in manufacturing processes and the lack of materials in public education.
